What Makes a Good Barbershop Experience?

A great barbershop experience is about much more than a great haircut.

I learned that years ago while celebrating my birthday in New York City. I booked a traditional shave at a barbershop I'd heard great things about. Looking back, I don't remember every detail of the shave itself. What I remember is how they made me feel.

They greeted me immediately. They were ready for me on time. The attention to detail was incredible. Most importantly, I felt like I belonged there.

As the owner of The Proper Barbershop in Newport News, that's something I've never forgotten.

After years of serving thousands of clients, I've learned that people may come to a barbershop for a haircut, but they come back because of the experience.

So what actually makes a good barbershop experience?

It Starts With Respect for Your Time

One of the biggest misconceptions people have is that a great barbershop is one where you can walk in and be serviced immediately.

In reality, the best barbers are often booked days in advance. Some are booked a week or more ahead.

Why?

Because clients trust them.

At The Proper Barbershop, we're appointment-based because we believe your time matters. Most people today are balancing work, family, activities, and responsibilities. They don't have unlimited time to sit around waiting.

In my opinion, you should never wait more than 15 minutes for a scheduled appointment.

Being on time isn't a bonus feature. It's part of the service.

When a barbershop respects your time, it shows respect for you.

Great Haircuts Are Expected

Let's be honest.

A great haircut isn't what separates a good barbershop from a great one.

It's the minimum requirement.

If a restaurant serves bad food, nothing else matters. The same goes for barbering.

Clients should expect:

  • consistency

  • attention to detail

  • a thorough consultation

  • technical skill

Recently, we've had clients visit us after disappointing experiences elsewhere. One of the most common comments we hear is how surprised they are by the level of detail.

Not just during the haircut.

Before it.

We spend time discussing what they like, what they don't like, and what they want to achieve. We make a plan before we ever pick up a clipper.

That level of consultation shouldn't be rare, but unfortunately it often is.

Cleanliness Matters More Than Most People Realize

A clean barbershop isn't just about appearances.

It's about safety.

Haircuts involve skin, tools, towels, and close personal contact. Cleanliness helps minimize the risk of irritation, infection, and other issues.

At our shop, we take this seriously.

For every client, we:

  • use a fresh cape

  • use a fresh towel

  • use a new blade

  • disinfect all tools

  • wipe down the chair

  • sweep the station

Every single time.

Many clients comment on how clean our shop feels when they walk in.

That's intentional.

A clean environment communicates professionalism before a single word is spoken.

The Atmosphere Should Feel Intentional

The moment someone walks into a barbershop, they're already forming an opinion.

What do they see?

What do they hear?

What do they smell?

What kind of energy do they feel?

At The Proper Barbershop, we intentionally curate the experience.

The music matters.

The cleanliness matters.

The overall environment matters.

Most importantly, we make it a point to welcome people as soon as they walk through the door.

Nobody likes feeling ignored.

In fact, that's one of the quickest ways any business can ruin an otherwise great experience.

People want to feel acknowledged.

They want to feel welcome.

They want to know they're in the right place.

Relationships Matter

This may be the most important part.

A haircut lasts a few weeks.

Relationships can last years.

At our shop, we focus heavily on client retention. Our goal is to retain more than 80% of our clients because we believe barbering is built on relationships.

A great haircut gets someone through the door.

Connection keeps them coming back.

People want to know that their barber:

  • remembers them

  • remembers their preferences

  • asks about their family

  • genuinely cares about them

We're not just working on hair.

We're working with people.

And people remember how you make them feel.

Consistency Is What Builds Trust

One great visit doesn't create loyalty.

Consistency does.

Clients shouldn't wonder what version of the experience they're going to get each time they visit.

The greeting should be consistent.

The cleanliness should be consistent.

The professionalism should be consistent.

The haircut should be consistent.

When clients know exactly what to expect every time they walk through the door, trust grows naturally.

That's when a customer becomes a regular.

So What Makes a Great Barbershop Experience?

If I had to sum it up in one word, it would be this:

Respect.

Respect for your time.

Respect for cleanliness.

Respect for consistency.

Respect for the craft.

Respect for the person sitting in the chair.

The best barbershops don't just provide haircuts.

They provide an experience where clients feel welcomed, valued, cared for, and confident when they leave.

That's what I've always believed barbering should be.

And that's exactly what we strive to provide every day at The Proper Barbershop.
